Day 1: San José – Maquenque National Wildlife Reserve
In the morning you are picked up at your hotel in San José by a private transfer what will take you to the Maquenque Eco-Lodge, a 60 hectare reserve located just north of Boca Tapada close to the Rio San Juan. After lunch (not included) you have plenty of time to relax and enjoy your rainforest experience - why not take a nap in the hammock on your terrace!
After dinner you join a guided night walk offering you the great possibility to observe nocturnal animals. A naturalist bilingual guide takes you through the garden of the lodge and rainforest. Various unknown sounds will surround you - a wonderful experience. Nocturnal life is completely different from the day life, you will be surprised!

Day 2: Boat tour on San Carlos River & visit a farm family
Today you take a boat tour on the Río San Carlos. The journey by boat allows you to observe an incredible variety of animals, including river-birds, monkeys, turtles and crocodiles. The tour will take you up river until reaching the border village of Boca San Carlos, where it will be time to take a refreshing drink. The tour continues with a visit of a small farm, where you can experience the rural life of the Costa Rican family and you can taste breadfruit, cashew nuts, coconut pudding and a delicious and aromatic freshly brewed coffee. After tasting the delicious local homemade products, you will head back to the lodge with a full day of new impressions, landscapes and nature. Finish your day with a delicious dinner served in the restaurant at the Lodge.

Day 3: Discover the secrets of the Rainforest
Early in the morning is the best time to discover the secrets of the rainforest! The guided walk starts at the Botanical Garden of orchids, to move to the butterfly garden to the realm of medicinal herbs. Your guide will give you interesting details about this habitat and you will enjoy this green paradise of Mother Nature. In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to get involved in the conservation of this green jewel, participating in planting a tree in the forest reserve of the place. Depending on weather conditions and month of your visit you will visit the school in the village of Boca Tapada, where the children love to receive visitor, to show their school and representations and cultural traditions.
Or make use of the canoes you can use for free! Enjoy the unique tranquility of the Rio San Carlos and explore on your own the enormous diversity of flora and fauna of the region as you paddle through the various waterways, you will discover many species of water birds. Almost half of all bird species in Costa Rica are recorded in this area. After a beautiful sunset enjoy a delicious dinner.

Day 4: Optional Horseback Riding Tour – Return to San José
Enjoy (optional) the experience of discovering the area and the rainforest in the typical way: on the back of a horse. A local cowboy will take you along the riverside to enjoy the beautiful landscape and excellent view of the river. In the village of Santa Rita you will have a break and get the chance to take a close look at the life of the local people. Later you enter the forest, and as the horse finds its way alone you have the opportunity to enjoy nature at its best! After returning to the lodge your private transfer will bring you back to San José or you may continue to your next destination.
